Cleveland based songwriter Tommy Botz released Teddy Bear in response to the 2012 Sandy Hook tragedy. It’s an incredibly sad country gospel song from the perspective of a grieving mother. Even if you’re not a country fan I’d encourage you to listen in order to simply reflect on the event.

The song begins with lullaby chimes before it moves into the main section. Structurally it’s very simple, but in this case it doesn’t need to be in order to elicit an emotional response. Logan Wells nails the vocals and imparts tons of feeling into the lyrics, which flip from mentioning innocent childhood items and franchises like dolls and Peter Pan to weeping and asking God for help. That contrast between innocence and tragedy really helps the song hit home for me and cement the fact that so many innocent lives were cruelly taken.

The song itself reminds me a bit of some slower Fleetwood Mac tunes with the way the piano, guitars, and vocals work with each other. I enjoyed the slide guitar leads as well as the violin break in the middle. I thought the samples of child laughter and voices were a little tacky and took away from the track. The music and lyrics did a great job by themselves of getting the message across.

Teddy Bear is an honourable song meant to remember the loss of innocent life. Give it a listen if you’re in the mood for mournful reflection. Check out more of Tommy Botz at the links below.
