Love Ghost — Heart Shaped Box SINGLE REVIEW

Love Ghost is back! The Los Angeles based alternative rock outfit is looking to the 90s with their cover of Nirvana’s Heart Shaped Box. It’s a well done cover that adds a little spice without straying too far from the original.

Immediately when the song begins you’ll hear some ambient keyboard playing that’s going to stick behind the song during the verses. It’s a nice addition and combined with the fat bass tone and drumming style it really makes the song have a nice pulse. Instead of the more rock inspired drums Dave Grohl used, Love Ghost went with a drum style more akin to a trap beat. It’s a really cool decision and really makes the song’s rhythm more pronounced.

Guitar wise the tone is very similar to the original and other than the guitar solo it’s pretty much the same. The vocals do something a little spicy and layer two singers during the verses — one handling the lower register and one handling the higher register. It helps give the song a bit of a surreal vibe and I thought it was pretty interesting.

Now, along with the music Love Ghost also released a music video to go along with it. You’ll be able to find that on their YouTube channel, posted at the bottom of the review. It’s a nice homage to the original and manages to capture that dated 90s feel you get whenever you watch a music video from back then. It uses the same fade in fade out shots of the vocalist as they did in the original, as well as the band shots are very similar. They also throw in some abstract shots like endless hallways or strange effect landscapes. There isn’t really a central story though, and the music video is pretty much the shots I outlined above. The music video was fun to see but I don’t know how rewatchable it is.

Overall this was a fun listen and I enjoyed the additions the band made to the song. Heart Shaped Box comes out this Friday, and the music video will release the night before. Listen to the song if you’re looking for some 90s fun with a modern twist. Check out the previous Love Ghost review that was posted last month as well as their social media pages below — Love Ghost has been pretty active over the past few months and I’m sure they have more a lot more in the pipeline.
